A selfie is a self-portrait captured with a smartphone camera. It is usually taken at a specific angle, preferably at 45 degrees from your eye level. In our society today, the term, selfie implies a naked or sexy photo of yourself. However, it doesn't have to be sexual. Also, it would be sexist to infer that men cannot take selfies.
Some people say that selfies are strictly for women to take of themselves; however, men have been known to send photographs of themselves to women in an effort to get their attention. It could also be done as just a friendly gesture. It all depends on what kind of selfie it is.
The term 'selfie' does not have a gender, meaning anybody can take a selfie. The feeling or urge to take selfies actually depends on the individual differences. Human beings are wired in different ways. What is driving you towards an action might be quite different from mine. We have different reasons for how we act the way we do. I have seen a lot of men who like taking selfies than a lot of women. However, generally speaking, women do take selfies more than men.
Women like showing off, an average woman would instantly agree to take a selfie if you suggest that to her, while a man will be reluctant about it. Although, there are some men in which their nature of profession will make them be taking more selfies. For example, a male celebrity does not have any choice; he will continue to have reasons to be posting pictures on different social media sites.
