What is the difference between Embassy and Consulate?

Embassy and consulate are representations of the particular government of a country in another foreign country. Embassy can just be one in another country, but consulates can be present in the states or cities of the country. While the embassy is a bigger representation of a country, the consulates can be referred to as the smaller version of the embassy. The consulates can actually be referred to as smaller embassies. The embassy is usually located at the capital city of a country; whole the consulates are located at the major cities of the country.

A country can only have its embassy in another country where their sovereignty is respected. A high diplomatic rank called the Ambassador to represent the embassy, while the Consuls represent the consulates.
