Anterior pituitary and posterior pituitary are two parts of the pituitary gland. They differ in terms of the total area covered by each of them. Also, another difference is seen in the area of the different cellular constitution of each of the two. Anterior pituitary makes up about 75% of the pituitary gland, and it contains adenohypophysis, which is the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. The various cells that form the anterior pituitary are- neutrophilic, basophilic, and eosinophilic.

Anterior pituitary helps greatly in the synthesis and production of growth hormone and hormone that is responsible for the development of the breast in the female gender. It also helps in stimulating the functions of the thyroid gland. Posterior pituitary makes up the remaining 25% of the pituitary gland. It contains neurohypophysis, which is the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, and it is made up of cells that look and function like the neurons. Posterior pituitary helps in the production of hormones like vasopressin and oxytocin

The anterior pituitary gland and the posterior pituitary glands serve different functions. The posterior pituitary gland stores the hormones, while the anterior pituitary gland creates the hormones. The posterior pituitary gland is less vascularized than the anterior pituitary gland. They both secrete hormones, but they are different hormones that they emit. The hypothalamus stores the hormones.
