Friendship Day was first created in the 1930s by Hallmark founder Joyce Hall. It was apparent Hall’s intent for the creation of this day because she wanted people to buy more Hallmark greeting cards, and this would provide a purpose.
However, when people realized the reason for the holiday, there was not a lot of response. Over the next few decades, it would rise and fall, but it never really took off. It wasn’t until recently when social media became popular that people began to start to celebrate Friendship Day.
Although, in the 1990s, more activities were done for Friendship Day and more acknowledgments too. For instance, Winnie the Pooh became the mascot in the sense of Friendship Day, and it became a little more accessible.
