A subwoofer is a specialized type of sound system. A woofer encompasses frequencies between 20Hz to 2KHz while a subwoofer only covers frequencies between 20 Hz and 200Hz. Woofers are typically smaller than subwoofers. Woofers can include a frequency range of 20Hz to KHz.
This frequency span is good enough for most applications, but for those who genuinely value quality sound, a subwoofer is the best. It is because of the focus on lower frequency ranges, subwoofers are often modeled to be bigger than woofers, and other types of speakers. New size allows the driver to move a lot of air, while still sustaining a shallow frequency.
