Gastritis and ulcers both inflame the stomach lining, but gastritis is a general inflammation, and an ulcer is a patch of the eroded stomach lining. Gastritis and ulcers are conditions that affect the stomach and the small intestine, and they share many symptoms. These include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Intense, localized pain is much more familiar with an ulcer. Ulcers carry the risk of bleeding, cancer, and eventual stomach perforation. Gastritis has three primary causes.
The first is the excessive consumption of alcohol. The second is taking excessive doses of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen, and the third reason is a bacterial infection of the stomach lining.
