Both sebaceous and sweat glands give off fluids onto the top of the skin. The primary difference between sebaceous glands and sweat glands is that sebaceous glands secrete sebum into hair follicles, and sweat glands exude sweat. Sebum is an oily material, while sweat is viscous and odorous. Sebaceous glands are positioned all over the body except for the palms and soles of the feet. Sweat glands are situated in the ear, eyelids, armpits, areola, and external genitals.

There is only one type of sebaceous gland, while there are two types of sweat glands called apocrine and eccrine. The apocrine organs are in the armpits, genitals whereas the eccrine glands are located everywhere else.
