AUCHD is Advanced Video Codec High Definition, which is a kind of high definition disc compression technology that is designed for camcorder use. Though both MTS and M2TS are file extensions for the same AUCHD, there is a slight difference between them. MTS was developed by Sony and Panasonic together as the recording format for the HD camcorders, while M2TS was created to store movie data on Blue-ray discs.

Both MTS and M2TS are file extensions for AVCHD video. MTS is the extension utilized in legacy file systems while M2TS is used in more contemporary ones. MTS usually designates that the file comes from an AUCHD camcorder, while M2TS from Blue-ray.
