The term ‘less’ means not as much, whereas the word ‘fewer’ means not as many. Both are comparative adjectives, and they both suggest a smaller amount of something. Less is used with uncountable nouns, collective nouns, and bulk amounts; however, fewer is used with countable nouns and distinct items.

The comparative form of little is less, while the comparative form of fewer is few. Less shows a smaller amount of degree, and as an adjective, less reflects the degree of comparison. When it comes to usage, less is mainly used without plural nouns.
