It can sometimes be confusing to differentiate two things that are related to each other such as species and population. Species are known to be individuals that may interchange with each other. For example, the dog is known to be a type of species. There may be different breeds but they are all interchanged with each other.

The population refers to the number of species that are available. For example, it will refer to the number of dogs that are available in one area. The number of dogs will be the population while the dogs will be the species. Take note that there are a lot of other species that are available all over the world.

Obviously, population refers to the number of individuals that are available for a specific group of species. For example, the population may refer to the number of people that are available in one country or it may say the number of people who inhabit a certain island. The ones who are living on the island are the species.
