The main difference between the two is the type of speed that can be delivered by both. Firewire will have a throughput of about 3.2Gbps which was already fast at that time but Thunderbolt can offer so much more at 10Gpbs. Thunderbolt also makes use of the mini display port connector which means that it will have the ability to accommodate more signals that may be needed and required at the present time.

FireWire and Thunderbolt cannot be interchanged. You would need to use the connection that you can use depending on your device. Thunderbolt and FireWire are still the best choices as compared to connecting the hard drive to any Apple device.

Some people may assume that Firewire and Thunderbolt are the same, but they are different from each other. The speed of these two is different. The max of Firewire is up to 3.2 Gbps while the maximum speed of Thunderbolt is 10 Gbps. Take note that you can connect to different types of interfaces depending on what you are using.

FireWire is generally used by people whenever they want to do some recording because this is higher than the expected 2.0 Gbps that the USB connector usually has. FireWire and Thunderbolt will not require the exchange of too much data before it would work.
