Abraham Lincoln was a U.S. representative and lawyer prior to becoming the 16th president of the United States. During the time he was president, the country was in a war. It was a civil war. It was called the American Civil War. The northern part of the United States was fighting the southern part of the United States. This was due to states’ rights and slavery.

The south, in a sense, had their president, and his name was Jefferson Davis. Jefferson Davis and the other confederates believed that they should have slavery. However, President Abraham Lincoln was president really of the entire United States, but at the time of the fighting, the South did not recognize Lincoln as their president.
