Why Summer Solstice is called as Mid summer?

I believe the name ‘midsummer’ developed etymologically from the fact that it is the mid-way between planting and harvesting season in most parts of the world. Well, it is astronomically referred to as midsummer, the day with the highest sunlight and longest period of daylight. This period of the longer day commences in the autumn, and the longest day comes in the middle of the equinoxes. The weather, in the beginning, gets so hot for a couple of months after the summer solstice occurs.

Meteorologically, it is the beginning of summer. Historically speaking, the day is the midpoint of a growing season and also the halfway between a planting and harvesting season. It should be noted that the meteorological summer commences around June 1 and comes to an end by the 31st of august. Meanwhile, astronomically, summer solstice commences by the 21st of June and comes to an end by the 23rd of September.

Some people feel that the summer solstice represents midsummer mainly because some people follow different three-month patterns every year. This means that the astrological season is based on the earth’s position depending on the sun. If you would consider its name, this usually happens during the midsummer and not at the start of summer.

People may have already experienced a few warm days before undergoing the longest day of the year. Some people call this midsummer because this is the season that is in between planting and also harvests. Take note that after this, the days will begin to shorten until the winter solstice is reached. This is known to be the shortest day of the year.

The summer solstice is referred to as midsummer most notably in northern Europe such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and many other parts of Europe. Summer, which is the warmest season of the year, comes between spring and autumn. Astronomically, summer occurs in the northern hemisphere early-May, and the end of summer in early-August.

The summer solstice occurs around June 20 -22nd, which is more or less “the middle of summer” astronomically. It marks the midpoint of the season. However, metrological calculations mark summer solstice as “the beginning of summer” as it determines the longest day of the year.
