Flag Day originated in Wisconsin by a grade school teacher from Stony Hill School by the name of Bernard J. Cigrand in 1885. Cigrand was a teacher in a small town in Wisconsin and thought the U.S.A. should have an annual flag day. He started leading the school where he was teaching to observe June 14 as Flag Day.
Though he later changed careers, he did not stop in promoting Flag Day to each state he would visit. He has a strong belief of people should be aware of the importance of the American flag to its people that they should not forget the essence of having a flag that shouts freedom and independence.
