Although they look very similar at first glance, it is possible to tell if an Elephant is an African Elephant or an Asian Elephant. The most notable difference is the shape and size of the ears. African Elephants have large ears; their ears look like the shape of the continent Africa while Elephants from Asia have smaller ears that are round in shape.

African Elephants also have a fuller, round shape of the head while Asian Elephants have a divot line running up the head. In terms of sizes, African Elephants are known to have more weight than the Asian Elephant. An African Elephant can weigh between 4,000 to 7,500kg while an Asian Elephant can weigh between 3,000 to 6,000kg.

African and Asian elephants may look similar in the beginning but the more that you look at them, the more that you will see their differences. The ears of African elephants usually look bigger. If you would check the map, the continent of Africa’s shape is similar to the shape of the African elephants.

Asian elephants ill have ears that are rounder. There is also a difference between their head shape. African elephants will have more defined bones as compared to Asian elephants who usually have a more rounded head shape. These two types of elephants are known to be closely related to the mammoth.
