Carbon and Graphite are seldom being used or said in the same context, but in reality, they are different. The most abundant element in the world is Carbon, while Graphite is one of the pure forms of carbons. Graphite is not an element as many are confused at. Carbon can exist in many ways when combined with the same carbon atoms or with other elements. Graphite, on the other hand, cannot form by itself as it is a formed substance.
Carbon comes from carbo, a Latin word, meaning charcoal. Graphite comes from graphene, a Greek word meaning to write. With these words originated from we can say that the material used in pencils is Graphite, not Carbon.
