Booth and Herold spent 4 days in the pine thicket concealing themselves in the trees. They are waiting for the right moment for them to cross the Potomac River into their destination which is Virginia. Since they are hiding, they needed help from other people to survive.

Some members of the Confederate underground and Thomas A. Jones provided them with newspapers and food to keep them sane. While they were in the thickets hiding, Booth discovered that the assassination he did to Abraham Lincoln was a heinous crime. He killed Lincoln by shooting a bullet in Lincoln’s head where the President passed away the next morning.
