The day was originally known as Decoration Day. This name came from the fact that after the Civil War, the graves were decorated with flags and flowers. Before the one Monday that we have, over the country, there were various days in which graves were decorated. By the 20th century, the days were merged into one. Once Memorial Day became an official day, it also became the name of that day.
