A Mexican is a person who is the citizen of Mexico or a citizen of the United States who has Mexican parents. A Mexican can be Mexican if a citizen has been approved United States citizenship because of residence inside a country for many years. Hispanic and Mexican are most times used interchangeably, but in the deeper sense of what the two words stand for, they are not the same. Hispanic simply means a Spanish-speaking person or culture. The word can also be used for a person residing in the United States, Latin America of Spanish ancestry. Mexican, on the other hand, is used to referring to a native or inhabitant of Mexico. While Spanish is the major language spoken by all Hispanics, a lot of Mexicans can't speak Spanish, although Spanish is the main language in Mexico.

Another difference is that the origin of most Hispanics can be traced back to Spain or other Spanish countries, while Mexicans are from Mexico.

Hispanic refers to a Latino person who speaks Spanish and lives in the United States. Mexican is a person who resides in Mexico. All Hispanics speak Spanish, though not all Mexicans speak the language. This is because Spanish was introduced to the Mexicans in 1512. Hispanics range from origins such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Mexico.

Mexicans have origins from Spainiards. Mexican not only refers to people, but it also can refer to food and the culture as a whole. There are about 68 indigenous Mexican groups. It is not good to assume one or the other about a person, being that Hispanics and Mexicans are closely related terms.
