What is the difference between Axe and Hatchet?

An axe and hatchet are two types of tools that are used to shape, cut, and split wood. Along with having the same purpose, the ax and hatchet can be confused for one another because they look similar to one another. Between the two, the ax has been around longer.

Out of all the tools that are available now, the ax was one of the first-ever to be created. It became to use in the early ages of man on Earth, because it helped those survive. A hatchet defers in its size, for it is smaller than an ax. It can be used with just one hand, while axes require both hands.

Both ax and hatchet are tools used for cutting, splitting, and shaping of wood. Both look similar and serve similar purposes. Axe was one of the very first tools created by man to survive in hostile environments and those living in areas where there are predators. The blade of the ax is made of iron or steel, and it is kept sharp to put unfathomable pressure on wood to chop it.

A hatchet, on the other hand, is sometimes referred to as a small ax as it was intended to be used with a single hand, as opposed to an ax which needs both hands to get the job done. The hatchet is for smaller jobs, and it is often half the size of a handle in comparison.

Although, both Axe and Hatchet look very similar, you would still notice some differences between them. The many characteristics of both axe and hatchet are enough to adequately differentiate between the two. Axe is an ancient weapon which has a head that has one or two blades and a long handle. The long handle of an axe is mostly made with strong wood.

Axe is also an important tool for tree fellers because apart from being a weapon, it is mostly used to cut trees into pieces. The two steel blades of an axe are designed to enable the tree feller to cut tree or wood as he wants it. Hatchet, on the other hand, is a small light axe with a short handle. It is used mostly by woodmen or carpenters to split light woods. Due to the light weight of hatchet, it can be handled with just one hand, while axe is handled with two hands.

Axes and hatchets are two types of wood cutting tools. Axes are more heavy duty used for heavy duty wood chopping and splitting wood. It is best to use axes with two hands. Two hands are best because it maximizes the striking power.

Hatchets are smaller and used to chop and split lighter woods. It is meant to be used with just one hand. An axe has a heavy metal blade and a wooden handle. A hatchet has a straight shaft. Axes are best used for preparing firewood, which is useful during camping. Hatchets are most used for wooden shingles.
