In contrast to what seems to be the general practices in most countries of other continents of the world where you would need a passport before you can travel from one country to another, most countries in Europe do not have that kind of practice. Once you are a European Union national, you are free to travel from one country to another without necessarily having to use any passport. Most European countries under European Union do not put a heavy restriction in their borders.
This is possible because of the Schengen Agreement. This agreement started on 14 June 1985, with about five European countries but has now enjoyed the participation of most EU countries. The idea behind the agreement is to create free movement between the European countries. Due to this, this is no serious border control in most European countries. However, a citizen will always be advised to go along with his or her passport while traveling from one country to another because of security reasons.
