In North America, the field of archaeology is officially considered to be a sub-field of anthropology. But, in all of Europe, it is often viewed as either a self-supporting discipline in its own right of passage or a sub-field of other disciplines.that are related such as anthropology. But, why is this so? The reason is that archaeology is said to be a social science, according to the powers in the United States.
It's not just about digging things up but rather, the discoveries of things that add to our knowledge of people and cultures of the past. Europe sees the situation a bit differently. It is its own entity of study. Both are correct in their own ways. North America puts more emphasis on the actual social realm of the digs and findings than Europe does.
