There are a total of three main protocols that ethernet dictates. Those are - communication, like Ethernet; management, such as when using the Simple Network Management Protocol; and lastly, security thereof, like Secure Shell (SSH). These three things are part of the protocols. Protocols are within a network. They are, in essence, a set of established rules which tell how to transmit, format, and receive data.
They entail doing so from servers and routers to endpoints which allow for communicating despite any differences there are in their underlying infrastructures, standards, or even differences in their design. In order to successfully receive and send information, all devices on both sides of a communication exchange must follow and accept the protocol conventions. Support for the network protocols can or may not be built into software which makes it compatible...or not. Some games cannot be played on ethernet driven devices, in other words, but many can be.
