Sadly, there is corruption everywhere but in Bulgaria it is reaching new heights - 158,000 corrupt dealings each month - because of inadequate criminal law and proceedings. There's a lack of autonomy and transparency in the judicial system so corruption investigations have been weakened.
Corrupt public officials feel they can continue with impunity, and all this has created an uncertain investment environment so that there's a push to make money illegally.
The corruption level in Bulgaria is greatly alarming. Corruption can be named as one of the things militating against the development of the country. Almost every sector and institution is corruption, both the private and the public. The Political parties and the government officials are not exempted from this, in fact they are the ones at the forefront of the criminal act. Many people believe corruption is something that started from the government and they must also participate.
Another contributing factor is the over dependency of the various sectors on the government. The judiciary is also corrupt, they don't have full autonomy, having a full investigation about any criminal activity that involves any government official will be politicized. It is also a common thing for people like lawyers, doctors to be receiving bribes from their clients. The security operatives and the custom officers at the border are known collecting bribes from people to aid their illegal deeds. Another factor is the high unemployment rate in the country.
