Bulgaria had stopped practicing a system where a king is a ruler. The last king in Bulgaria was during the of Simeon II. His real name was Simeon Sakskoburggotski, he was born on June 16, 1937. He resigned from 1943 to 1946 as the Simeon 11, Tsar of Bulgaria. During this time, he was a minor and as a result of this, his royal authorities were being exercised by the Regents led by his uncle Prince Kiril, Nikola Mihov and the Prime Minister, Bogdan Filov.
The reign of Simeon II was abolished in 1946 following a referendum that happened in the country. As a result of this, the dethroned king went into exile in Spain. He lived in Spain till 1996 when he returned to his home country and created a political party called National Movement For Stability and Progress. In 2001, he became the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria and served till 2005. Simeon is one of the two former monarchs that would also serve in the government of Bulgaria.
