The United States congress is comprising of the Senate and the house of representatives. And the two legislative houses are known as upper chamber and lower chamber respectively. Any member of the Senate or the house of representatives is called a congressman. The work of a law maker is not the one you would not be paid for and of course, as every other elected officers or officials are being paid so also are the congressmen.

On average, a congressman, whether a member of the house of representatives or the Senate receives $174,000 as his annual salary. However, some members of the congress do not receive the same annual salary as their colleagues. The majority leader is receiving the same as the minority leader, the two earn $193,400 as their basic annual income. Also, the speaker of the congress receives the highest salary which is $223,500 annual salary. In addition to this, all members do receive additional allowances.
