Anxiety disorders including acrophobia are not just a case of "nerves." You can’t overcome an anxiety disorder only through determination, nor can the symptoms be disregarded or wished away. These disorders cause you to feel apprehensive most of the time, making some ordinary circumstances so uncomfortable that you may sidestep them altogether. Or, you may experience sporadic instances of anxiety that are so petrifying and powerful that you may be immobilized with fear.
Phobias are diagnosable illnesses and should be treated by a mental health professional. Once, evaluation and diagnosis are in place; there are medications, behavioral therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy that can be utilized as a treatment for this disorder.
Acrophobia which simply means an extreme or intense fear of heights is a form of anxiety disorder. A close study of people who suffer from this condition would let you know that acrophobia is a mental disorder. To have a clearer picture of my explanation, mental disorder is about all sorts of mental health conditions that affect our thinking, behavior, and even our mood.
Example of mental disorders are eating behavior, depression, addictive behavior and particularly anxiety disorder, under which acrophobia or extreme fear of heights can be categorized. The reaction of people to different kinds of all known phobia especially acrophobia is one way to show and distinguish their conditions according to what they are afraid of. An acrophobic person will always have fear of high places even when his mates or people around do not feel the same way.
