Brunel adopted Sharia law because they have old fashioned beliefs, and their laws reflect as much. Brunei has become the first country in East Asian country that has selected sharia law. They have been condemned for it by many countries because the law is very harsh. It is Islamic law, and much of the country is Islamic.
The law includes harsh punishments such as flogging, and the cruel and unusual punishment of dismemberment and death by stoning for those crimes they feel cannot e tolerated like adultry and rapes. The laws are considered to be primitive and are being reviewed for cruelty which doesn't seem to bother most of Brunel's citizens, but it does concern much of the rest of the world. It is not known what will become of the law because other countries are reviewing it.
In 2014, Brunei adopted and introduced the Islamic criminal law as their religious conservatism deepens. It was reported that the sultan announced the introduction of sharia as a great achievement for his country. In the first phase of adoption, people will face conviction and fines or jail terms for offenses like pregnancy out of wedlock, failure to observe Friday prayers and to believe in other faiths.
The second phase will encompass theft and alcohol consumption which would incur whipping and amputations. The crime of adultery, sodomy and insulting the Koran or Muhammad will suffer death, including by stoning. Most of these laws will also apply to non-Muslims.
