Detroit is the motor city because of being Michigan's main city and Michigan was the perfect location with the Great Lakes, the Erie Canal, and the railroads.
Industry quickly became the economic driving force, especially the car sector of Detroit. At one point, Detroit was America’s fourth-largest city.
