Why is Detroit so important to the US Government?

It's the motor industry of Detroit that represents the current failure of capitalism to the government. In the 50s and 60s this industry flourished magnificently creating jobs for skilled, unskilled, white and black alike - example of the American Dream.

The city was vibrant, successful. Since the 70s the movement's been downhill and now Detroit is the seat of the most massive bank outrage, the largest municipal bankruptcy.
