Jiankui was indeed condemned by the scientific society. He said he cloned twin girls which started a major movement to condemn him. Over 120 letters were written by scientists and researchers that were condemning him for being wreckless and unethical in his scientific studies and the things he did with cloning and such. He was described as being crazy. He used a gene editing tool before its time.
Part of the problem was that he was doing things that were not commonly known about it the day and time but also, there was a fear of what he was up to and his motive behind it all. Now that such things are much more common, he most likely would not be scorned so harshly. But, what WAS he up to, good or evil? He certainly was a pioneer in genetic and cloning type research and development but paid the price in being made fun of.
