Ronald Reagan did really want a space program that many people would call the space force. The official title of it was the Strategic Defense Initiative. This was a defense system. It used missiles which would help keep the United States safe from nuclear war and nuclear weapons.

However, ironically, Ronald Reagan and the Soviet Union signed an arms treaty to stop producing or purchasing certain types of missiles. This occurred and was formed in 1984, but it was renamed in 1991. The Department of Defense was in charge of this program. In order for this to happen, the president’s program wanted to make certain lasers and missile systems. These things would go into space and that is why it was associated with a space force.
