Why did Reagen veto the Civil Rights Legislation?

The Civil Rights Restoration Act was first sent to the House in the middle of 1984 and it wasn’t until 1988 that it was finally accepted in the Senate. There was a portion about abortion that seemed to have a problem with many of the people in Congress regarding passing it. The National Organization for Women had a problem with it. President Ronald Reagan vetoed the act, but it was able to pass due to the veto being overridden by Congress.

According to Ronald Reagan, the reason he vetoed this bill was due to the result it would have on the federal government which would give it more powers over churches and private institutions. These places would have far less power and freedoms.
