The main headquarters for the Manhattan Project was in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The government wanted a place that could be kept quiet so this small town was picked. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was in charge of this project. Many engineers that were contracted by the government and military were selected to come to Oak Ridge with their families to create this bomb.

It was supposed to be a secret. Oak Ridge was considered to be a secret city. Everyone had to pass through a security either to enter or leave the city. It began prior to the involvement in the war in 1939 and over one hundred thousand people were working for this project. It cost a couple of billion dollars.
