Like the United States, Austria has a free public school system. It is also mandatory. People in Austria must go to the school for nine years. At one point, you can either go to school or to a vocational trade or work. When you go to work, you do not have to go to school that day. They have both public schools which are free and private schools which are not free.
About ten percent of the schools are private schools. Many are Roman Catholic schools. The schools have a similar grading system like those in the United States. It is based on numbers. One is excellent, two is good, three is satisfactory, four is sufficient and five means you failed.
