There is a large bulge around the Equator which makes for a higher elevation. In Ecuador, there is a mountain called Mount Chimborazo which is actually closer to the moon and to space than the highest mountain. The highest mountain in the world is Mount Everest and is taller than Mount Chimborazo. Mount Everest is 29,035 feet above sea level and Mount Chimborazo is only about 20,702 feet above sea level.
This large area around the equator makes for a higher placement of the mountain in the first place. This makes it actually closer to the moon. So, all of this depends of perspective and how you see things. For this matter, the measure you use and where you begin the measurement is also significant.
