General anesthesia works with several types of procedures together. The anesthesiologist will administer the medicine through a mask and the patient will breathe a type of gas that puts them to sleep. They may also be given an IV into the vein to give medication directly into the bloodstream to put them to sleep. There are also muscle relaxers that helps the patient to relax and also inhibits any involuntary muscular reactions as well.
In the throat, a tube is placed to help the patient to breathe during the operation. The muscle relaxers and the ability of the anesthesia is so good that the patient actually needs help in breathing properly. During the surgery and during the entire time that you are out, the anesthesiologist will monitor your condition and see your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and each of your vital signs as well.
