Physicians wishing to be anesthesiologists must participate in a one-year internship and three years of residency to get recognized as anesthesiologists. This makes anesthesiologists specialized doctors.Anesthesia is complex and scientists do not even know for certain why anesthesia works, though they believe it has to do with the stopping pain signals from reaching the brain from the spinal cord. Administering it is also rather complex and needs to be done carefully.

It is for this reason that specialized physicians with advanced training in administering anesthesia are needed. In addition to administering it, they will also make plans with patients of what anesthesia to use and what levels would be safe as well as help patients prepare for application of the anesthesia. This is because if a patient has a condition, such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease, it can complicate the administration of the amnesia resulting in unusual side effects.
