Novels are still popular but there is a possibility that their role may be changing in the future. Novels might be in the process of being supplanted by short stories which are shorter and don’t take as long to read. It is also possible that novels are in danger of becoming a specialized interest among some who enjoy “difficult” reading. On the other hand, this may be just a passing trend and novels may once again become more popular.
Currently, most focus is on novels whether in print, audiobook, or ebook form. Nonetheless, novels have been part of the culture for centuries, so it is unlikely that it is going to fade away quickly. As a result, aspiring novelists should not despair. Printed books are still popular. Americans read as many as 5 books a year on average. Also, only 7% of American readers do not read printed books, meaning that the printed novel is not entirely dead.
