Everyone is constantly working on their communication skills. It starts by taking a little time and slowing down. When it comes to doctors, and the communications they are relaying to others - there are several things that can happen. First, they need to figure out what type of communication works best in the setting they are working in. Writing things down, sending emails, and expressing their thoughts that way can be one way to ensure that excellent communication continues. However, when it comes to patients, things are a little different. Patients want answers, and they want to understand what the doctor is saying.
While using medical terms is fine, it helps when the doctor backs up and explains in layman terms exactly what they are wanting to get across. Many doctors today seem to always be in a hurry, and they can sometimes leave one feeling confused and unsure about what was exchanged in the exam room.
Having doctors take the time to sit down, and clearly state the information is helpful. That can mean asking questions, and requesting follow-up information, to ensure that you fully understand what is going on. As doctors learn to take the time to communicate better with their patients, they are also learning to communicate more clearly with their staff as well.
