The first novel that Charles Dickens published was in 1836. It was “The Pickwick Papers.” This novel is also known by the title “The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club.” It was not published in one large novel. Instead, it was released in several smaller installments. These installments ran from March 1836 through November 1837.
It was not until much later that it was gathered into one cover and put together. While the Pickwick Papers is noted to be the first novel that Dickens wrote, he was already actively writing for a newspaper at the time. His collections which were being published in the paper were quickly picked up by an editor, who wished to push them out to the mass public on a larger scale. Within a year, Dickens would release his second novel, “Oliver Twist,” and then go on to delight readers with even more selections and new books.
