An embolism is a blood clot that forms, usually in the leg. Sometimes it is caused by thick blood or Deep Vein Thrombosis. Other times it develops because the body over clots when it is trying to constructively stop bleeding. The clot then travels through the bloodstream upward to the lungs, heart or brain where it becomes lodged in an artery. Embolisms can also be made out of air or fat. They are dangerous all the same once they travel to the heart, lungs, or brain. They can cause a stroke, the inability to breathe, or even a heart attack.
If an embolism is detected, it can be disolved or surgically removed. Otherwise, it can be fatal. It is imperative to seek medical help if you think you have one whether it is in the form of a clot on your leg or if you feel one has traveled to your heart, lungs, or brain.
