What does "desktop" mean?

The Desktop refers to the initial screen on your laptop or personal computer, which contains all the icons and programs, folders, applications and files. The screen pops up as soon as you log in to your computer. The desktop is the primary user interface that allows you to visualize and access different aspects of your computer.

You can access the settings, control the graphics, incorporate different visuals as well as open a number of programs. You can imagine it to be the city central, where you have the access to a number of different departments with the click of a button.
