Has sudoku's popularity declined? if so, how?

Like any fad that involves puzzle, they are very popular at the beginning when people begin to learn about this new type of puzzle. Then people start talking about it and sharing this new puzzle with others. However, before long, the puzzle craze begins to subside because either a new type of puzzle has come along or people just get tired of doing those puzzles.

Therefore, sudoku has been on the decline because it began in the 1990s. Now newer puzzles have become popular that may not even involve numbers anymore. They now include letters like word with friends. It is still popular, but it has lost its extreme popularity over time by the other games that people are playing that used to play sudokus.
