First, you must figure out the goal of the puzzle. If there are numbers already placed in the sudoku puzzle, then you need to look at those numbers. Then you start writing numbers inside of the boxes. You must make sure that numbers are not repeated when you look at each column, row and three by three subgrid. Each column, row and subgrid should have numbers one through nine without repeating.
Therefore, you really need a good eraser. If you find that when you get close to getting done that there are squares empty, but writing a number in one box helps out the row, but it will not fit into the column, you must change those. You also need to figure out where the problems are and erase your numbers.
