The Puritan religion was under direct attack from other religious groups including the Quakers and the Baptists. There were several religious factors that promoted the Witch Trials. Among the aspects were the influence of the strict Puritan lifestyle, they believed in the existence of the Devil inside the community, and a conspiracy involving the town ministers.

Puritan laws were extremely inflexible, and the members of society were expected to follow a strict moral code. It is because of this that anything that went against this code was considered a sin and deserved to be punished. The Puritans placed blame on the Devil when difficulties in the community began to arise. Blame was placed on the Devil and the “witches” that were carrying out his work.
