How many people were murdered during the Salem Witch Trials?

The Salem Witch Trials in 1692 were a dark time in American history. In colonial America, practicing witchcraft was a felony. More than 200 people were cited for practicing witchcraft, and 20 were killed during the hysteria. Nineteen people were hanged, one was even pressed to death under rocks, and several people died in prison while waiting for trial.

During the Salem Witch Trials, the accusers would strip the man or woman and observe their body, looking for any unusual mole or freckle. According to the judge and jury, this could be enough to make you a witch. Also, they would strip the man or woman, tie them up, and throw them into a body of water.

About 20 people were executed during the Salem witch trials. Between 1647 – 1663, about 80 people were accused to be associated with witchcraft in a witch Hunt in New England.

Most of the people executed were women. 13 women were executed and 2 men were also executed. 5 others died in jail.

20 years after the conviction in 1711, the coloy passed a bill pardoning those accused and granted monetary restitution to the surviving victims and their families.
