Stomach cancer is associated with long term survival if it is treated at an early stage. Unfortunately, the outlook is poor when it is diagnosed at a later stage because cancer has already advanced. The two most crucial stage indicators are the tumor and the lymph nodes. Tumors that have not grown beyond the stomach wall have a better prognosis than tumors that have grown through the wall.
The number of lymph nodes that cancer has spread to affects the prognosis. If cancer has spread to three or more lymph nodes, the prognosis is less favorable. Cancer that has not advanced into the blood or lymph vessels tends to have a better prognosis than cancer that has spread to blood vessels.
