The simplest hydrocarbon is methane (CH4). It is made up of only one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. It is the leading constituent of natural gas. The respective abundance of methane on earth makes it a valuable fuel. At room temperature and normal pressure, methane is a colorless, odorless gas.
The addition of an odorant achieves the familiar smell of natural gas that is used in homes, usually blends containing test- butyl thiol. As a safety measure, methane has a boiling point of 164 degrees Celsius. (-257.8F), at a pressure of one atmosphere. Methane is used in industrial chemical processes. It is also important for electricity generation.
