The difference between aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons is that aliphatic hydrocarbons consist of linear chains of carbon atoms, like methane CH4, ethane, C2H6. Aromatic hydrocarbons consist of closed rings of carbon atoms. The similarity is that they are both hydrocarbons, aliphatic compounds are hydrogen and carbon.
They can be linear, circular, or branched in any number of ways. Aromatic compounds are drawn as having alternated single and double bonds. Aliphatic means compounds react like an alkane or one of its derivatives. Aromatic compounds are benzene, benzene derivatives, or heterocyclic compounds. Aliphatic compounds have straight, branched cyclic structures whereas aromatic compounds contain a cyclic structure. Aromatic and alpha reactions are contradictory.
